Collecting Dots | Day 0

Welcome to Day #0 of The Well Home journey!

Although the idea for The Well Home has been brewing for a while (Day #421 since the date of LLC incorporation), today marks the beginning of sharing its story with you. I want to share how this idea came to life and how it evolved over time.

So, let's start with the idea itself.

I often say "Most bad ideas are simply underdeveloped good ideas." Mine was no different.  Like most ideas, mine started out choppy, incomplete, and half-baked.

Good ideas often take time (days to years) to develop and are usually the result of multiple smaller ideas – or "dots" – that eventually connect to form something meaningful and worth pursuing.

For me, these dots led to the creation of The Well Home:

  • 2012: My father is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and I become his primary caretaker. I realize that medical treatment alone isn't sufficient for his care.

  • 2015-2017: I discover that simple design changes in my home directly impact my father's health outcomes and quality of life.

  • 2018: Spotify execs challenge me to start a health media studio called Well Played. We develop a reality TV show concept called "Healthy Home Makeover," which focuses on transforming homes into wellness spaces.

  • 2018: My mother-in-law suffers a stroke, and I injure my knee on a safari trip in Africa. This forces me to reevaluate our respective living spaces to improve our quality of life.

  • 2019: Friends ask me for advice on home design and digital health tech to support various health conditions (sleep, migraine, asthma, dementia, and more). I realize there's a significant gap in the market for home-based health design solutions.

  • 2020: COVID-19 hits, and our reality tv show concept is put on hold. Digital health innovation surges, and people prioritize self-care, wellness, and prevention.

  • 2021: I realize that "Healthy Home Makeover" is a better business idea than a TV show. I begin researching the market need.

  • 2021: I receive a cease and desist order from Dwell magazine for my company's name, "Dwellbeing." However, they later express interest in partnering with me. (validation from a big name)

  • 2022: The Well Home is officially incorporated on April 22, 2022.

These connected dots led to a bold mission: eliminating chronic lifestyle diseases by applying the science of healthy design to our homes, allowing us to age well in place.

However, transforming this budding concept into a viable business would require perseverance, a well-defined market niche, a strong business model, a formidable competitive edge, a defendable moat, and much more. It necessitates sturdy roots to establish a firm foundation.

With some deliberate creativity (title of my forthcoming book) and intentional ingenuity, a fledgling idea can blossom into a grand achievement.

In the forthcoming emails, I will share my process for nurturing ideas, and I hope it resonates with your own creative pursuits.

Until next time, keep collecting dots!
